If you want to use a Zoom H1 to record sound, but do not want to sync the sound in post, you can put a cable from the zoom line out, and then put it into your D7000 mic input, so far everything seams obvious. Now the difficult bit . How do I know that the sound not peaks, even if the zoom meter indicates a safe level? Well, after some testing, I came to the conclusion that the correct settings was to set the camera's microphone to its low setting (Movie Settings -> microphone). After that, set the sound output on your Zoom H1 to 30. Then you can be sure that the sound does not peak in the camera. I can not guarantee that this works on other cameras, but it is possible that it works, at least on the Nikon D5100.
